They made more room at the store this year due to the large number of guests attending. Quest also donates prizes & is more involved with LLTH every year!

Cynthia made sure there was a large variety of great post race food, including her famous homemade soups. I heard nothing but positive comments!

There were several glitches at LLTH this year, but they were dealt with as they became evident. I'll mention a couple: The people delivering the port-o-lets to Horine dropped them off at the finish line instead of at the start and were all locked initially. The gates to various sections of Jefferson Memorial Forest (JMF) were locked and HeadFirst Performance was unable to set up the aid stations when they arrived early in the morning -- it seems since last year, JMF instituted a policy of locking all the gates at sunset. Apparently the person who unlocks the gates every morning was late in arriving on race day, so the aid station which was scheduled to be in the parking lot across from the Welcome Center was moved to the Welcome Center and the aid station at Scott's Gap had to be moved twice -- transferred from a temporary location at the gate and later to the scheduled location next to the trail.

As noted previously, in collaboration with Land Between the Lakes (LBL), a special award will be given to those who complete both LLTH (50k, 15m or 6m) and LBL (50m, 60k, marathon or 23k). Information on LBL can be found here:

https://runsignup.com/Race/KY/GrandRivers/LandBetweentheLakestrailruns

If anyone has any photos/videos/race reports that they wish to share on this blog, send them or the link to me. Thanks!

Congrats & Thanks to all for making LLTH a success this year!

HOME
edhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07547250951360169480noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3422506676029661731.post-12997752664909470802024-01-31T18:30:00.004-05:002024-02-02T11:24:35.746-05:00Jan-31-2024 LLTH last minute notes
Foremost on last minute notes for 2024 is: the closure of the north end of Holsclaw Hill Road, the main route to LLTH. will be pink this year. JMF & contractors within the Forest also use pink (& other colored) flagging, so be aware of the course layout beforehand and follow the pink flagging on the well worn trail to stay on course. Flagging on wooden stakes are always the contractors'.

Trail junctions will be marked with several
flags & major junctions will also have signs or a volunteer on
site. Intermediate flagging is spaced approx. 200 to 300 feet along the
entire course.

There are course changes this year: For both the 15m & 50k, there are minor diversions in the Tom
Wallace Recreation Area (past the Welcome Center) due to ongoing
construction. For the 50k, at Scott's Gap: the entry/exit trail segment to the 3 mile loop has been moved from the east to the south and a steep incline & 2 deep ditches have been bypassed on the loop section. Also, instead of running up & down Scott's Gap Road, you will now cross this paved road & run up & down a trail that's parallel to it.

Current local forecast from the National Weather Service can be found here: NWS Fairdale, KY With warmer than usual weather predicted & very good trail conditions, there will be many more users sharing the trails than on a usual race day here. Land Between the Lakes (LBL) trail running event in western KY, a

Online registration will close on Wed, January 31, 2024 at 11:59 pm EST.

There will be a few course changes in 2024 as Jefferson Memorial Forest (JMF) continues their program to remove steep sections and also the technical trail sections in the Forest. The most notable course changes will be at Scott's Gap in the 50k. A new course map will be forthcoming for the 50k. Also, the Tom Wallace Recreation Area of JMF is currently being revamped with new parking lots, sidewalk & landscaping affecting the Purple Heart section of both the 15m & 50k courses. This construction is presently active and it appears the course will cross work areas in at least 3 locations. Since nobody at JMF is able to provide any information about the construction, it appears the conditions will just have to be dealt with the day of the race. There should be only minor diversions from the original course thru these areas and at worst, the course will be diverted to the park road for a short segment.

The 2024 FAQs have been posted. Information about training runs can be found there.

UPDATE:

Unfortunately, there's another disruption to this year's LLTH. Jefferson County has recently decided to close Holsclaw Hill Road between Mitchell Hill Rd & the Horine entrance to LLTH starting Monday, January 29 for culvert construction. Access to LLTH will be blocked if you're coming from Fairdale on Mitchell Hill Rd to the north end of Holsclaw Hill Road. The only way to the race start will now be from the south end of Holsclaw Hill Rd which starts in BROOKS. Headfirst Performance. Results will be on
Ultrasignup at a later date once the results have been finalized and
HeadFirst Performance gets them uploaded to that site.

Recap:

The 19th running of LLTH is now history. This year there were over 400 entrants.

start video:

The weather and/or trail conditions usually add to the challenge of LLTH. The weather though, was fairly typical for this time of year with low 20's & light winds at the start with upper 40's & moderate winds in the afternoon. As for trail conditions, many of the trails resembled ice
rinks on Wednesday, but warm temps on Thursday & the sunny day on
Friday pretty much removed all the ice except for some isolated spots & 3 or so short sections : on the gravel road
just after the start, the 2nd downhill on the Red Trail and the downhill
approaching the sidewalk on the Siltstone Trail. For the most part,
the trails were hard & frozen for the 1st few hours & then were increasingly muddy as the day wore
on.

2023 winners:

50k: Benjamin Shirrell 4:47:13 Piper Gray 5:55:12

15m: Evan Heitz 2:02:00 Melissa Pitts 2:20:08

6m: Seth Snider-Hayes 41:59 Sally Thompson 50:08

Other notes:

Like
last year, the free pasta dinner had several hundred attendees -- Quest Outdoors has been a great sponsor & has done an incredible job putting on this dinner. Thanks Quest!-

As
usual, tasty homemade soups & other assorted food was available at
the post race meal -- Thank you Cynthia from all of us!

As
noted previously, in collaboration with Land Between the Lakes (LBL), a
special award will be given to those who complete both LLTH (50k, 15m
or 6m) and LBL (50m, 60k, marathon or 23k). Information on LBL can be

It's recommended to pick up your packet on Friday to avoid the rush & lines on race day.

Flagging will be pink this year. Trail junctions will be marked with several flags & major junctions will also have signs or a volunteer on site. Intermediate flagging is spaced approx. 200 to 300 feet along the entire course.

Out on the course flagging trails today, there’s a layer of ice at many locations on the trails from the sleet and freezing rain yesterday with a very light dusting of snow on top. At times it was difficult to even hike. Forecasters say it will warm to the low 40's tomorrow (Thursday) & will do a lot of melting but I would not count on all of it melting & what does melt will probably refreeze Friday & early Saturday, so be prepared for ice.

At Mitchell Hill Lake mile 6.2 this morning:

All main roads in Louisville are clear, although the 1st half mile of the race is on a gravel road that holds water in one area & it was a sheet of ice today, as were all the wood trail bridges.

Current local weather from the National Weather Service can be found here: NWS Fairdale, KY

The course layout is unchanged from last year — not even minor changes, which is rare. The direct link is currently at:

https://headfirstperformance.com/Results/22%20LLTH.pdf

If you note any errors or have any missing information, notify Headfirst Performance -- the sooner the better. Results will be on Ultrasignup at a later date once the results have been finalized and HeadFirst Performance gets them uploaded to that site.

Recap:

The re-scheduled 18th running of LLTH is now in the books. There were
more new registrants in the last 2 weeks since registration reopened than
the number of runners who deferred their entry to next year. There
were the usual drop downs & drop outs this year -- still over 250 finished.

start video:

The weather or trail conditions usually add to the challenge of LLTH. This year both made it tougher than usual:

The area received over 2” of rain on Thursday. However, with 2 cold nights, most of the course froze over. With temps starting in the low 30’s and only reaching the upper 30’s late, much of the course remained frozen the entire race day. Still, there were muddy spots/holes/short segments that expanded as the day progressed, but not real bad considering what it had been.

As for the weather, the skies stayed mostly clear and it was very windy. The wind chill made the 30’s feel like the 20’s all day. The 25+ mph wind gusts from the northwest were most noticeable on the hill tops and ridges.

2022 winners:

50k: Scott Ritter 5:34:16 Lauren Manuel 6:31:45

15m: Evan Heitz* 1:55:04 Jayla Elati 2:37:12

6m: Ronald Black 46:27 Jessica Miller 56:33

*Evan Heitz had the fastest time on the 15m course since the hilly Purple Heart section was included in a major change in 2014. Ryan Althaus still owns the LLTH record for 15m of 1:53:55 in 2013.

Other notes:

The free pasta dinner at Quest Outdoors was
unexpectedly attended by more than 3 times the usual number that had came
the 4 years previous. Runners will likely be queried during
registration next year as to if they (& any guests) might attend the
dinner to get a better handle on the number of possible attendees.
Quest Outdoors plans to expand the dining area and food quantities as
needed next year.

The homemade soups & assorted foods,
including mystery burritos were again a hit at the post race meal at the
Horine Center -- Thank you Cynthia from all of us!

Hats off to the Public Works Dept who cleared the trails of trees & debris since the ice storm 2 weeks ago and for
also clearing the trails, on very short notice, of downed trees after
the heavy rain and windstorm on Thursday.

As noted previously, in
collaboration with Land Between the Lakes (LBL), a special award will
be given to those who complete both LLTH (50k, 15m or 6m) and LBL (50m,
60k, marathon or 23k). With the heavy rain (2") and gusty winds today, some more weakened trees have fallen across the trails (there's currently at least one large one on the Siltstone trail). Don’t know if the crew will be able to get to them on such short notice — if not, they’ll just add to your race day challenge!

Since 2020, there have only been very minor changes to the courses, and those have mostly been on the 50k portion of the Siltstone trail -- minor diversions at: Jefferson Hill Rd for a new trail bridge; Bearcamp Rd aid station for a new road culvert; and reconstruction of the Scott's Gap trailhead.

Flagging is orange this year. As usual, trail junctions are marked with several flags & major junctions have signs or a volunteer on site. Intermediate/confidence flagging is spaced approx. 200 to 300 feet along the entire course.

And, as in 2020: In collaboration with Land Between the Lakes (LBL) Event, a special award will be given to those who complete both LLTH (50k, 15m or 6m) and LBL (50m, 60k, marathon or 23k). Information on LBL can be found here: https://runsignup.com/Race/KY/GrandRivers/LandBetweentheLakestrailruns. When you finish at LBL, just let them know you did LLTH and they'll hand you the award.

Have Fun! recap : (photos & photo links to be added later)

A great turnout for the 17th running of LLTH (around 400 registrants) despite the prospect of wet trail conditions and with the snow showers in the preceding hours before the start. It hovered around the freezing point early and it would reach the lower 40's by late afternoon on a mostly cloudy day with the winds becoming breezy by noon.

The 1/2"-1" snow from very early Thursday morning had disappeared from the trails during the day Thursday but remained about everywhere else till late afternoon. Also the early race morning dusting of snow quickly disappeared from the running surfaces. The grass parking areas were snow covered early and everyone handled them OK.
With only minor & rare freeze/thaw cycles this "warm" winter, the trail foundations have been solid this season in the Forest including this week. The rain on Tue, the 1/2"-1" snow in the very early Thu a.m. hours and a dusting of snow just before the race kept the trail surfaces wet, but overall in fair to good condition. Of course there were some real muddy spots, but they were somewhat isolated -- these poorly draining areas are muddy even in drier times.

Scott's Gap Trail and the far (west) end of the Siltstone Trail were a little surface wet/damp and in very good condition.

The dropoff that was mentioned in the "last minute notes" post didn't cause any problems race day. The area had dried up since that rain on Tuesday and someone had also fashioned a rock "step down" which provided a solid landing coming downhill. Didn't see that landing on the return trip but by then it had really dried up & was uphill anyway.

2020 winners:

50k: Bob Adams 4:34:09 Sally Thompson* 5:56:10

15m: Garrett Bowers 2:05:03 Amanda LeBlanc** 2:12:42

6m: Thomas Hunter 47:59 Rachel Noirot 53:47

*Sally Thompson becomes the 2nd runner, joining Alicia Heyne, to have completed a LLTH TRIPLE -- that is, have wins in the 6m, 15m and 50k. For Sally, the wins have been: 6m (2016), 15m (2018) and the 50k (2020). For Alicia, it was: 6m (2014), 15m (2011, 2012, 2015, 2016) and the 50k (2018).

**Amanda LeBlanc improved on her winning time of 2:22:55 last year & had the fastest time for Females since the hilly Purple Heart section was incorporated into a new, longer 15m course in 2014, surpassing the 2:13:32 by Alicia Heyne in 2015.
It's recommended to pick up your packet on Friday to avoid the rush & lines on race day.

Flagging will be orange this year. Trail junctions will be marked with several flags & major junctions will also have signs or a volunteer on site. Intermediate flagging is spaced approx. 200 to 300 feet along the entire course.

Out on the course today, the trails were wet from the rain yesterday but were hardly muddy at all (with a few exceptions) -- nothing like a couple years ago when the frozen trails thawed the day before the race making it muddy, then rain on race day. Hard to predict what the trails will be like 3 days from now as the forecast for race day has been changing daily . . . . The most current forecast can be found here:

National Weather Service

For current road/weather conditions (traffic cams): Weatherbug

The courses are the same as last year with the minor exception being a short re-route around the 1st small lake at about mile 6.5. After crossing the dam, instead of going thru the spillway, you'll now go over it using a small bridge (slick when wet!) and traverse a newly cut trail thru a dirt (now mud!) bank.

NOTE for 50k runners only:

There's one precautionary note I would like to add here. Normally I would not have to say anything to ultrarunners about trail technicalities, however, since it was a tricky maneuver for me today and the potential for real injury is there, I felt it best to at least say something about it.

At about mile 14.5, OUTBOUND on the Siltstone Trail, there's a small bridge where the trail turns right immediately at the end of it. There use to be a large stump there that supported the trail on the corner but that has slipped off down the hill leaving a dropoff/hole & roots. Be careful, especially if wet & slick, as a small trip or slip here will send you down a steep ravine on the right, and it's a long way to the bottom.

Photo shows the dropoff looking from the OPPOSITE direction going INBOUND (uphill) on Siltstone -- ravine is on the left in this photo. The bridge end is tricky going OUTBOUND (downhill) and is about a half a mile past the little shelter on the sidewalk where the railroad tie steps start. Photo is deceptive & it's steeper than it looks.

A sign is being made & will be installed by race day & say something like: "CAREFUL DROPOFF AHEAD" The bridge itself is a little green from the lack of really cold temps so you don't want to be flying across this slick bridge anyway to find this surprise.
Recap

The 16th running of LLTH is now history!

The weather always seem to play a part & adds to the challenge every year -- it was no different this time:

Ice

I didn't notice water draining onto the course & freezing, other than a small section of sidewalk, but on one access road to the race, there was water draining from the hill & it formed sheets of ice. The hill had been salted, but was useless as a constant stream of water flowed down & across the road & took the salt with it.

As the start of the race approached, it was observed that more race packets than expected were unclaimed. Word came in that traffic had backed up on the hill coming from Fairdale when drivers could not get by the ice on the steep hill. Someone was dispatched to assist, but word that the start would be delayed 30 minutes came too late for some in line & they gave up. Everyone who was patient or just couldn't get out of the line made it in time for the start.

Trail conditions

At one time the forecast called for low teens on race morning & it was expected to freeze the course. With a temp of 19 degrees though & sunny skies at the race start, the trails were partially wet in some areas, even on the 1st section. I believe that the ground was still retaining some heat from the unseasonably high temps (mid 60's) less than 2 days earlier. Temps would reach the mid 30's by late afternoon. Many trails were rough thruout the day as there were many footprints & ridges pushed up that were frozen into the trail from foot traffic earlier in the week. The most thawing I noticed in the afternoon was towards the west end of the course at Scott's Gap and where parts of the trails were exposed to the sun.
LLTH 2020:

There seems to be an increasing negative sentiment about LLTH with the management at the Jefferson Memorial Forest. This includes both the use of the trails and the Horine Center. Don't know if it's because of new hires, new policy or the public, but I'm hoping this issue is resolved as planning for 2020 will not be able to start.

There are 2 locations in Louisville with early packet pickup & registration on Friday, February 8: KEN COMBS RUNNING STORE at 4137 Shelbyville Road from 11 am to 2 pm EST and at QUEST OUTDOORS at 4600 Shelbyville Road in the Shelbyville Road Plaza from 4 to 7 pm EST. QUEST OUTDOORS
will be having their FREE pre-race pasta dinner again this year at
their store location from 5 to 7 pm EST -- everyone is welcome.

You can also register or pick up your race packet at the Horine Center at the Start/Finish area on race morning around 7 am EST. It's recommended to pick up your packet on Friday to avoid the rush & lines on race day.

Flagging will be light orange this year. Trail junctions will be marked with several flags & major junctions will also have signs or a volunteer on site. Intermediate flagging is spaced approx. 200 to 300 feet along the entire course.

It's been raining most of the day here with 60+ degree temps. More rain is predicted thru tomorrow (Thursday): FORECAST Lots of water & several real muddy spots on the trails, but with a "flash freeze" predicted Friday, the concern will be ICE and slick spots on race day. Most of the trails will be "crunchy". Past experience on these trails has shown ICE can be a problem as sometimes water drains or seeps from the side of a hill down onto a trail & freezes solid. Hopefully it won't Saturday, but BE WARY, especially on narrow downhill trails.

The courses are the same as last year with very minor changes due to damage from the major ice storm last November.

NOTE:

Some low-cost gloves (& hand warmers) have been donated to Headfirst Performance — you’ll find them in your race packet. These HI-VIS gloves can be handy when hunters are around. Guys - Lg, Gals - M, both fit on the small side.

Keep Warm, Have Fun & Good Luck!
Temps would be a "balmy" 46 at the start, slowing dropping to 40 by late afternoon. There was a light breeze in the morning that picked up late in the day. Light rain was falling at the start. It was a misty, drizzly day with occasional periods of light rain.

The deadline for online registration thru Ultrasignup has been extended to tonight. Late registration will be available at packet pickup.

There are 2 locations for early packet pickup on Friday the 9th: at KEN COMBS RUNNING STORE from noon to 4 pm EST and at QUEST OUTDOORS from 5 pm to 8 pm EST. QUEST OUTDOORS will be having their FREE pre-race pasta dinner again this year at their store location at 4600 Shelbyville Rd in the Shelbyville Road Plaza in Louisville -- all runners are welcome.

Packet pickup & late registration on race morning will start around 7 am EST at the Horine Center at the FINISH area. There are a limited number of race buffs in the packets for the 50k & 15 mile runners only.

Flagging will be orange this year. Trail junctions will be marked with several flags & major junctions will also have signs or a volunteer on site. Intermediate flagging is spaced approx. 200 to 300 feet along the entire course.

As of this morning, the FORECAST for the race is for temps to be in the 40's & a chance of rain. Currently, the trails are pretty wet from the half inch rain last night. Streams are still low.

On the Blue Trail on the 15m/50k course at the dam earlier this morning:

The course is the same as last year with only one change: a short re-route of the Siltstone Trail at the 50k/15m split where the trail meets Tom Wallace Lake at the dam. Due to the change at the dam, the aid station that was located there in previous years has been moved a quarter mile to the gravel overflow parking area across the road from the Welcome Center. With this change, there will be one less aid station for the 50k runners, now 7 total. 15 mile runners will still have 3 aid stations. See the 2018 FAQ for more info.

A traffic note for those traveling thru Fairdale on the way to the race: The dog-legged (offset) intersection in Fairdale was replaced by a traffic circle last summer. Your GPS probably won't show the new traffic pattern and since the new road signs are difficult to see, the best advice I can give you is: get on the road with the brick building (fire station) -- that's Mitchell Hill Road that will lead you to Holsclaw Hill Road & the race start.

Have Fun & Good Luck!

A record crowd attended the 14th running of LLTH. Entries numbered over 400 for the 1st time -- due, in part, to the expected weather & trail conditions, which were better than usual. The temps would range from 17 to 39 on a partly cloudy day & there was a very light breeze.

As expected, the trails were frozen thru mid-morning. With the hard overnight freeze, parts of the trail that were only damp on previous days had ice form near the surface. Then as the sun & temps rose higher, the trails did develop some slick areas & a couple fairly muddy spots in the afternoon. The trails were actually in better shape earlier in the week despite the lack of any precipitation since then.
Online registration thru Ultrasignup closes tonight. Late registration is available at packet pickup on Friday (3rd) at Ken Combs Running Store from 12 noon to 5:00 pm EST and on race morning from 6:30 - 7:30 am EST at the Horine Center at the FINISH area. There are a limited number of race buffs in the packets for the 50k & 15 mile runners only.

It has come to my attention that the sidebar of this blog may not be visible with all mobile web browsers -- sorry. The sidebar contains useful links about the race & is visible on a PC.

All races start at 8:00 a.m. EST. Sat 2-4-17

QUEST OUTDOORS has announced they're having a FREE pre-race pasta dinner again this year at their new store location at 4600 Shelbyville Rd in the Shelbyville Road Plaza in Louisville at 6 p.m. Friday (3rd). All runners are welcome.

HeadFirst Performance just recently changed their website host. Their race website is still under construction. The location of the race start is in the Horine Section of Jefferson Memorial Forest. The entrance to the Horine Section is at 12304 Holsclaw Hill Rd, Louisville, KY. The start of the race is about a half mile from the entrance down the narrow park road. The address (11311 Mitchell Hill Rd) currently listed on Ultrasignup for LLTH will take you to the Welcome Center, about 2 miles from the start and on the wrong road. More specific directions, using Google Maps, can be found using the links in the sidebar of this blog. If there's any question about the race, you can send it by adding a comment to this post, or you can email me directly at edibo@insightbb.com or you can email Cynthia Heady, RD, cynthia@headfirstperformance.com. Things are really busy now till the race so will try to get out an answer if there's time.

There's been a record number of entries (383 so far, usually 300 or less) this year. It's recommended to arrive early as the usual parking areas will likely overflow. There's been some consideration to staggering the start time of the 6 mile runners this year & in the future due to the increasing number of runners -- nothing has been decided at this time. Everyone starts on the gravel road for the first 0.6 miles, but inevitably a bottleneck/backup eventually forms as it narrows down to single track trail at that point.

Flagging will be a light orange this year. Trail junctions will be marked with several flags & major junctions will also have signs or a volunteer on site. Intermediate flagging is spaced approx. 100 to 200 feet along the entire course.

Current forecast is for partly cloudy skies with upper teens
to low 20's at the start & highs in the upper 30's to low 40's. The
streams are mostly dry. Trails are in very good to excellent condition. It's rare to have the trails in this condition this time of year. If there's a frost heave race morning, that will bring some moisture to the surface -- possibly causing spotty slick spots if or when the ice melts in the afternoon.

On the Blue Trail on the 15m/50k course this morning:

The course is the same as last year with only one very minor change that those familiar with the course might notice: the bridge just after the start of the Siltstone Trail (15m & 50k) has been replaced & relocated away from the road -- bypassing the steep, sharp rock steps (made of siltstone) and replacing them with slab rock & a short switchback.

Have Fun & Good Luck!

The 13th running of LLTH is now history. There was a good turnout as the weather cooperated for us again this year. A little colder (27 degrees) than forecast in the morning but that helped keep the mud on the course frozen thru mid morning. As the temps slowly rose to the low 50's, the mud would reveal itself although it wasn't as bad as last year when there was a similar weather pattern.
Late registration is available at packet pickup tomorrow, Friday (5th) at Ken Combs Running Store from 12 noon to 6:00 pm EST and on race morning from 6:30 - 7:30 am EST at the Horine Center at the FINISH area.

Flagging will be a light orange/pinkish color this year. Trail junctions will be marked with several flags & major junctions will also have signs or a volunteer on site. Intermediate flagging is spaced approx. 100 to 200 feet along the entire course. The blue & white flagging you may see along the trail is used by the Forest Service.

The Forest had some heavy rain Tuesday night. With dry weather thru Saturday, the course should be in good condition overall (some muddy sections). The current forecast is for 30's to 50's on race day so the trails won't be frozen as they are most of the time for LLTH.

The Forest Service made minor changes thruout the course since last year. These were done to make the trails easier for the general public. The only one you might notice is the addition of 9 or 10 steps on the 2nd hill on the 1st loop -- this location had been difficult for some in snowy & muddy conditions.

Good Luck!
